What the lens is made of
Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic, not glass. Polycarbonate is light and hard to shatter, but sunlight damages it. Manufacturers protect it with a thin clear coating applied at the factory.
What goes wrong
Years of sun, engine heat and grit from the road wear that coating away. Once it is gone the plastic underneath oxidises. It turns cloudy first and then yellow.
A hazy lens scatters the light and blocks part of it, so the beam on the road gets weaker even when the bulbs are fine.
What restoration does
Restoration sands away the damaged surface in stages and then polishes the lens until it is clear. Done properly, the lens looks close to new and the lamp puts its full light on the road again.
When restoration is not enough
If the lens is cracked, if there is moisture or haze on the inside, or if the reflector behind it has dulled, polishing the outside will not solve it. We check for these before starting and tell you what we find.
