BMW lighting

3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3, X5 and others

BMW headlights are built around projectors and rings from the factory, so the work here is rarely a conversion. It is restoring a system that has aged: projectors that have dulled, rings that have gone yellow and dim, and lenses that have clouded.

Done properly, an older BMW gets back the sharp white front end it had when new, usually with more light than it ever had.

Most cars in Kenya arrive as used imports that are already several years old. Their headlights have had years of sun before the first Kenyan owner switches them on, which is why lens haze and tired light sources are so common here.

Work we do on BMW

  • Bi-LED projector replacement on xenon cars
  • Angel ring renewal with white or RGB LED rings
  • Projector retrofits on halogen-grade cars
  • Lens restoration and resealing

Model by model

What each BMW has, and what we suggest

Factory lighting varies by grade and year. This is a guide. We confirm what your car has when we see it or a photo of it.

3 Series E90 (2005 to 2012)

From the factory

Halogen reflector headlights on base cars, bi-xenon projectors with angel-eye rings on others. Early cars light the rings with a halogen bulb, later cars with LED.

What we suggest

On xenon cars, a Bi-LED projector replaces the worn unit. Yellowish halogen-lit rings can be renewed with bright white LED rings. Base halogen cars take a full projector retrofit.

5 Series E60 (2003 to 2010)

From the factory

Halogen or bi-xenon projectors with angel-eye rings.

What we suggest

Projector replacement and ring renewal, plus lens restoration. These are among the cars that change most.

X5 E70 and X3

From the factory

Bi-xenon projectors on most, with rings.

What we suggest

Projector replacement, ring renewal and fog light upgrades.

3 Series F30 and newer

From the factory

Halogen, xenon or LED depending on grade.

What we suggest

Halogen-grade cars take a Bi-LED projector. LED-grade cars come in for custom rings and lens care.

What goes wrong

Lighting faults we see on BMW

1

Dull or burnt projector bowls

The reflective surface inside older xenon projectors degrades with heat. The bulb can be new and the beam still weak and patchy. Replacing the projector is the cure.

2

Yellow, dim angel eyes

Early rings are lit by a small halogen bulb through a light guide, which gives a faint yellowish glow. LED rings are crisp white and far brighter.

3

Cloudy or crazed lenses

BMW lenses haze and can develop fine surface cracks. Restoration deals with haze. Deep crazing may need a new lens, and we will say so.

4

Moisture inside the lamp

Failed seals and vent caps let condensation in. We find the cause and reseal the unit.

Questions

BMW owners ask

I fitted new xenon bulbs and the light is still poor. Why?+

On older BMWs the projector's reflective bowl is usually the problem, not the bulb. Once that surface has dulled, no bulb will fix it.

Will I get warning lights on the dash?+

BMWs monitor their lamps, so the right decoders matter. We fit the modules the car needs and check for warnings before you leave.

Can the rings be white instead of yellow?+

Yes. That is one of the most common jobs we do on E90 and E60 cars.

Tell us the car. We will tell you what it needs.

Send the make, model and year, and whether you want a restoration or an upgrade. You will get a price before any work starts.
